9/29/23 Lewis and Clark Caverns

9/29/23 – Friday:  Last night’s low was 39 degrees.  We have two little electric heaters that we set up and they did good at keeping us at a nice pleasant 65 degrees all night.  And we didn’t even have to use our propane!  We have really sketchy cell service here, so I’ve been writing this in “NOTES” without the pictures, so hopefully I insert the right pictures in the right places when I finally have a chance to copy this into the blog.

I couldn’t find any tour times for the cave tours, so we left camp at about 10:30 to go up to the visitor’s center and get the scoop.

9/27/23 Time to Fall to the South

9/27/23 Wednesday:  We did the final touches on putting Island Girl to bed for the winter.  It’s hard to leave her for SEVEN months!  But really I guess it’s only three, since we’ll be here for a few days around Christmas.  Then another four months before we’re back in the spring for another summer filled with land and sea adventures.

Kenny checked all the systems while I checked all of the interior.  I like to make sure there is nothing touching the hull, like blankets, pillows or clothes than can get damp.  I set a fan to run on a timer for three hours every morning down in the bedroom to circulate air.  That is the lowest place where condensation would settle.  We set the three little built-in electric heaters as low as they’ll go, which says is 45 degrees.   I don’t know what temperature they really come on at, but our power bills from last winter weren’t bad at all, and nothing was damp when we returned to her.  We made the final loads of stuff out, locked her up, and said good-bye.

May 1-4, 2023: Montana with family: Part 2

Monday started out a little more cloudy, so we had to bundle up a little more to stay warm. Today we headed to the west of town, hoping that maybe we could stay at lower elevations longer to avoid finding too much snow too soon in the day. We started out with a stop at the gas station, then across the highway and out a paved road for awhile. Pretty soon we were crossing a pretty river.

April 25,26,27, 2023: North to the cold and snow!

Tuesday we were up and getting ready to go around 8:00. It was cold and windy outside!!🥶. BRRRR as we were hitchin up the gettyup to go. We weren’t happy that there was wind, but we need to go, and thankfully it wasn’t gale force. Our route was to go up through Salt Lake City to a campground north of Ogden. There’s mountains with snow in between here and there. Salt Lake City is in an extraordinarily beautiful setting at the very foot of some very tall (over 11,000’) mountains. Thankfully the pass doesn’t go that high, but it might get interesting.

9/11/19. Montana, back to Idaho, then Utah

Wednesday:  425 miles.  Elevation tonight: 4550’ in Springville, Utah (near Provo).

Argh!  Get me out of the cities says my Captain!  Yikes.  6 lane freeway, bumper to bumper at 70 mph.  Talk about nerve wracking:  Ogden, Salt Lake City, Provo was about 100 miles of stress.  OK- no more Interstates or cities…. for awhile.

We started out in Ennis, looking forward to a cute little coffee shop that we saw for our breakfast.  Darn!  It was closed.  So we found an itty bitty drive up coffee stop, got our coffee, and surprisingly – a hot breakfast sandwich, and a yogurt parfait.  Away we go!

It was really cool and the clouds were near the ground.  Darn.  I was really hoping to see some big mountains today (The Grand Tetons would be to our east as we travel down Highway 20.) Read more

9/10/19 Hi Ho, Away we Go!

Tuesday:  Miles traveled: 385.  Elevation tonight:  4,940’ in Ennis Montana.

We hugged our daughter good-bye, kissed the sweet tiny baby faces, and headed out on our way.  With a stop at Starbucks for coffee & breakfast to go, it wasn’t long before we were through Idaho and into Montana.  After all, Idaho is only about 75 miles across on I-90.

Glaciers and a Red Bus

Glaciers and a Red Bus

After Shannon’s bachelorette party/bridal shower, we took a few days to head east a bit to explore Glacier National Park in Montana.  Neither of us had been there (at least as adults), so we figured this was a great time to go!  Our friend Kimbob, (who we met on our Bahamas boating adventure), used to drive a Red Bus at the park, and he highly recommended a visit while we were north for the summer.

As we approached the exit to go north in Montana from I-90, there was a lot of smoke!

There have been so many forest fires this year, but when I checked the status at the park, there were no closures or fires that would affect our visit to the park. Our original plans were to drive from Glacier up into Canada to Banff National Park, then west all the way to Whistler, than back down to Washington.  But Canada had so many fires burning, we decided to only go to Glacier then head back west.

On our way north, we found Flathead Lake. This is just a tiny piece of it.  It is a large lake in Montana, south of Kallispell at the base of the mountains. Read more
