Day 52-Change in plans

Monday May 10, 2021.
Temp: 73/54, Humidity: 61/89%, Top Wind: SW15mph, Precip – some rain, Miles Traveled: 9.5

It was warm last night, only getting down to about 70 outside. We slept with one window open and the fan running. I started out with the hatch over our bed open , but with the threat of rain, didn’t think that was very smart. It did sprinkle a little over night, and everything was wet outside in the morning. At least we were dry, if not a bit sweaty, inside. I got up before 7:00 and checked the weather. Still looking like thunderstorms early afternoon, and wind anywhere from 15 and up with higher gusts once we get out of the swamp. I went back to bed thinking… what’s the hurry? We don’t HAVE to go anywhere, so why are we stressing over it? And it’s free to stay here! So even though we don’t have power to plug into, we have great batteries and a generator for living without shore power. We both looked at the forecast again, and finally decided to just stay. We kind of had a deadline to make the decision, because there would be boats coming north about an hour after the 8:30 lock opening. The catamaran sailboat that was on the wall had departed, so there was an empty wall spot. If we were going to stay, we should un-raft from Seeker, and go grab the spot on the wall. I texted Ann on Hallelujah! since I could see that they were coming. She said there were SEVEN boats coming that locked through together! YIKES! We would definitely have boats rafted to us. The sailboat Monarch decided to peel-out before the flotilla arrived, so that left another open spot on the wall. We went ahead and untied from Seeker, and made our way over to the end wall spot. That way if we ran our generator, it was pointed toward the trees. While we waited for the boats, I tried another flower portrait, and at least this time there is a stem attached to the flowers. 😉

Sunday May 9, 2021.
Temp: 80/45, Humidity: 41/100%, Top Wind: E15mph, Precip? no, Miles Traveled: 65

******************

I think it’s our last day in North Carolina. Do you think Virginia might be less windy? LET’S HOPE SO!
We got up at 6:00 and were off the dock before 6:30. It seemed nice and calm in the marina, so we were happy that we had waited until today to leave. We had cloud cover, and the sun was just coming up.

Friday, May 7, 2021.
Temp: 65/52, Humidity: 26/89%, Top Wind: BIG -29mph, Precip:yep -some rain in the evening, Miles Traveled: none

@@@@@@@@@@@@@

It was cloudy and the wind blew a lot today. We didn’t do much of anything except hang out on the boat. In fact, I’m pretty sure Kenny didn’t even set foot on the dock once today. It was just kind of a crappy day. Unfortunately, the wind was blowing from a direction that the waves were blowing into the marina at us, so we were moving around a lot. It was not a calm and peaceful day on the water. 😏. But there really wasn’t anything else to do, so we just spent the day at home.

Day 48-Tootle to Albemarle Plantation

Thursday, May 6, 2021.
Temp: 65/58, Humidity: 49/81%, Top Wind: N13 mph, Precip: none, Miles Traveled: 19.9

*********************

It was a nice calm relaxing morning today. The water was calm here in the marina which is a change from what it has been. Looking out at the sound, it looked pretty calm out there, too. However, the wind was from the north, so it was blowing over the top of us and the sound wasn’t really as calm as it looked. We knew that, so we took our time this morning, since the winds were supposed to calm down as the day went on. So – let’s have some yummy goodness from our purchases yesterday! 😋

Day 47-Low key kind of day

Wednesday, May 5, 2021.
Temp: 84/65, Humidity: 44/99%, Top Wind: W17, gust to +29! mph, Precip: YEP! some rain after dark,
Miles Traveled: a few via borrowed car!

*******************

We expected today to be windy, so we planned to stay put. I got up around 8:00 and it was calm outside. WHAT?! 😳
It was kind of foggy and dreary looking because I couldn’t see across the sound. We got a text from Irrational Exuberence. They were trying to get here yesterday, but tucked in to Columbia because it got too rough. Columbia is across the sound from us and they said it was windy and rough over there this morning. Hmmm. 🤔 It wasn’t an hour later, and we had white caps outside the breakwater. I’m glad we weren’t tricked by the calm and we trusted the forecast. It got WAAY rough, and we were rocking, rolling, bouncing, bobbling, you name it. I almost grabbed a chair to go sit on the dock to stop moving. We did take a break and go to the Edenton Coffee shop for breakfast and coffee. They fixed us some croissant breakfast sandwiches which were yummy.

Day 46-Exploring Edenton

Tuesday, May 4, 2021.
Sunny & Hot, Temp: 89/69, Humidity: 96/52%, Top Wind: SW10 mph, Precip: some evening ⛈,
Miles Traveled: 3 on foot, 3 with Stuart Peezee!

**********************

Warning- Lots of Pictures today! It was a sleep in day, and minimal breakfast, because our goal for today was to go have lunch at the Old Colony Smokehouse for some Championship BBQ! The only problem is that it’s a two mile walk each way, which in Kenny’s book might as well be twenty. I looked on the Google map, and there is a boat launch and a wall that we should be able to tie up to. So, a brilliant idea popped out…. let’s take the dinghy! It will be kind of a pain in the butt to get Mr Stuart Peezee off the back of the boat, but the winds were calm, so let’s do it!! It was a bit of a challenge, since we had to inch Island Girl forward and not lose her outside of the pilings. Then unstrap, uncover, and launch Stuart without bonking him into anything rough on the dock. It didn’t go quite as smoothly as planned, and let’s just say we’re really glad Kenny didn’t have his phone in his pocket. 😳
Stuart’s little Suzuki electric start motor fired right up and he was so ready to go! We put island Girl back into her proper position, and away we went! Here is our route. Much easier than walking, since the temperature today is going to be 90-ish!!

Day 45-Up the Albemarle Sound

Monday, May 3, 2021.
Sunny, Temp: 82/65, Humidity: 99/62%, Top Wind: S13 mph, Precip: YES! ⛈, Miles Traveled: 46

***********************

This was a get-up-early kind of day to try to beat the weather. We had 46 miles to go, which at normal speed would take five hours. The forecast was for SW winds 10-15 this morning, then a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Wind would be picking up a bit by 11:00, so we wanted to beat feet. Thanks for the tie-up and hamburger, Alligator River! We pulled out at 6:35, and we were maybe the fourth or fifth boat out of ten to leave…. everybody had the same idea today. The Albemarle Sound can be one of the gnarliest bodies of water on the whole loop – not to be messed with.

The wake-up alarm for our early morning escape was set for 6:00. I was wide awake at 5:30, got up and was dressed before the sunshine. As crazy as that is, I was blessed with a beautiful sunrise. The colors were so pretty! I think it’s wonderful how our Creator can make this brown water look a beautiful purple at sunrise. 😊

Day 43-Dowry Creek

Saturday, MAY 1, 2021.
Sunny, Temp: 69/52, Humidity: 53/31%, Top Wind: N13, Precip: none, Miles Traveled: 44, TOTAL MILES 1161

*****************************

It’s the first day of MAY already?! 😳 I had to look to see how far away from home we are. We’ve traveled 1161 miles so far. Not bad for six weeks.
You probably wonder why I take pictures when we’re leaving a marina. Well, I’m too busy to take pictures when we’re arriving! 😁.
So long River Dunes! From what we saw on the weather forecast, the wind was going to die down in the afternoon. This is opposite of normal, when we usual plan for calm mornings, and wind in the afternoon. So we planned to wait until about 10:00 for our departure. Our neighbors, First Light, left about a half hour before us. It seemed pretty calm in the marina, so we pulled our lines and set off for today’s journey to Belhaven.

Day 42-Waiting on wind at River Dunes

Temp: 80/71, Humidity: 78/29%, Top Wind: W 19, gusts over 25 mph , Precip: none, Miles Traveled: none

I think that people who live and cook on their boats are probably among the creative chefs of the world. Sometimes you look at what you have and ponder, hmmm 🤔 what can I do with that?, because you can’t just run down to the store to get missing ingredients. Such was the idea for breakfast. Somewhere along the way, I had purchased a box of strawberries. Then I forgot about them in the fridge. Then I remembered them, cleaned them, and put a bit of sugar on them. They went back in the fridge. Then I remembered them again. But what to do with them? I know!! We bought those biscuit donuts in New Bern, and let me tell you – they are DENSE! They get the donut 🍩 name because they are round and fried and glazed. But there’s nothing fluffy about them except maybe the calories that fluff your midsection when you eat them. So I broke one up into pieces, warmed it up, topped with strawberries and a bit of cream….. YUMMM! 😋🍓. THAT was a good breakfast and a great way to use those so-called donuts!
