From Tusayan (Grand Canyon), we drove south just about 100 miles to Sedona, AZ and stayed here one night. I had heard it was a beautiful place, so I put it in our itinerary. We got to go on another “squirrelyass” road! (the driver’s words). It was a very pretty drive through Oak Creek Canyon.
It was raining – which answered my question about how it could stay so green around here. The green against the rugged red rocks was beautiful!
I tried to get some pictures through the rain.
This is Uptown Sedona. We did come back for dinner after the rain stopped and walked through town. Sedona has a huge focus on spiritual vortexes, crystals, and psychic energy. This really is not our thing. Our spiritual energy comes from a different Source.
There were a few scenic places I thought might be worth a drive, so we did go find the Chapel of the Holy Cross, which was interestingly built into the side of the red rock hill. It is a Roman Catholic church, built in 1956!
Just a couple more shots from the passenger seat.
I read that the rugged red rocks are spectacular at sunrise or sunset – but once again, we had too many clouds for that extraordinary show.
Sedona was really pretty, and is probably even breathtakingly beautiful with the sun and shadows, rather than a cloudy day. The Oak Creek Canyon and the Slide Rock State Park within it looked like a terrific place to do some hiking.
