Day 147: Hop around to Gore Bay

8/6/18 Monday:  It was nice and calm when we left the Kagawong marina.  It was a cloudy day, which was surprising after being so hot yesterday!  Although we did have that giant thunderstorm, Island Girl is still like a bug magnet!  Bugs, bugs, everywhere bugs!  And all the spider webs just add to the bug volume.

Today was just a short 18 mile jump around a hump, from Kagawong to Gore Bay.  We went past a funny little island that looked like it had palm trees on it!  And yes, it was a little breezy out here again today.

This is a good map of Manitoulin Island.  We didn’t leave until around 11:00, and we were in Gore Bay by 1:30.  When we got there, we saw Phanthom was already there, along with some other looper boats that we didn’t know.  It is amazing how we keep meeting new loopers all along the way!

Among the loopers was Barefoot Shoes, who had just crossed their wake (completed the loop) for the second time, and they were now Platinum loopers!  Herb gathered us all up onto their boat to help toast their new platinum status.  Isn’t that weird how we’ve been traveling along roughly the same route, and never crossed paths with some boats?  I didn’t have my phone on me, so I didn’t get any pictures.  😕  As always, loopers are just a great bunch of people, and we enjoyed meeting this great gang!

Gore Bay has a big marina!  This picture only shows a piece of it.  And the slips are super wide, so docking was pretty easy on the captain.

When we walked up to the marina office to register, we strolled around just a bit.  There is about as much to this village as there was to Kagawong.  Well, maybe there was more to it if we had gone up the hill, but down around the marina there wasn’t much.  The marina had a really good marine store, and there was a little restaurant called Buoys near by which was reportedly pretty good.  However…. there was a BREWERY!?

Yep, right there by the marina was Split Rail Brewing.  Smart people!  It was a busy place, so we popped in and Kenny tried a 3 beer flight.

None of them were really hoppy or very beery tasting, so I probably could have drank a whole glass.  WHAT?!  I did help him quite a bit with the Loonsong Oat Stout.  Look at him Grrrr-ing at me for drinking his beer!  You know it wasn’t very beery if I could drink it without making a funny squinched up face.

The rest of the day was pretty kicked back.  I spent an hour or so doing a load of laundry and using up the very last Canadian coins that we had.  Then we had dinner on board and used up a bunch of our vegetables.  I figured that if we were re-entering the USA tomorrow, it’s best not to be transporting much produce across the border.

So our last day in Canada was pretty laid back.  It was a cloudy, sprinkly, but low 70’s kind of weather day.  We’ve really enjoyed our seven weeks in Canada.  The people are friendly and helpful, the scenery is beautiful, and they have a weird way of packaging milk and cheese, eh?
