6/23/20: The final Keys episode

It’s our last day in the Keys for this trip. All four catamarans that were docked by us are gone, and nobody has come in their place. The dock seems so empty! I didn’t note this earlier, but there are still quite a few restaurants, bars, and stores that are not open yet in Key West. One popular restaurant right here at the marina called Turtle Kraals is still closed. The famous Sloppy Joe’s Bar on Duval is still closed. The drag queen shows are not happening. And of course, there are no cruise ships. Not everything in Key West is back to normal. Last night while we were walking through town, it was SOOO nice because nothing was crowded. But the town can’t survive forever at this reduced level of tourism. Hopefully Covid will ease up and our world can get back to a new normal before too long.

It was a low key day. I took a walk to another little grocery store, and it was a great little store! Fousto’s Food Palace, on the corner of Fleming and Bahama St. They had lots of nice quality fresh produce, fresh meat, a little bakery and deli. I will remember it for next time! It’s about a 3/4 mile journey from the boat. It is just one block off of Duval from Margaritaville. So it wasn’t as far as the Rum Bar or even D.J.’s Clam Shack! It’s still a trek though, when you’re carrying stuff in a backpack. But it’s closer than the Publix, which is over 2 miles away, and kind of a scary adventure on a bicycle. (Been there, done that, and fortunately lived to tell about it!)

On my walk, I stopped to take a picture of this. We saw it yesterday, and it made me smile, because we’ve been to Green Turtle Cay in the Bahamas, and loved it there.

William Curry was born on Green Turtle Cay in the Bahamas in 1821, and homesteaded this lot in 1852. He was Key West’s leading merchant for forty years, reportedly Key West’s wealthiest citizen, and Florida’s first millionaire. His son erected this house here in 1905 utilizing some of the original structure. It’s a really neat looking Inn now.

The rest of the day was relaxed. I sat outside and read a book for awhile. Scene from my chair. 😎

Mechanic gave the Girl a once-over, making sure she’s ready for the long trip tomorrow. It’s going to be a hot and miserable day. We will be traveling almost due north for the whole day. The light breeze which will match our speed of 9mph will be coming from the south east. We might get a whisper of it from the east every once in awhile, I hope.

We might just have to start the generator, drive from inside, and run the air conditioning for awhile! At least we have that option! We’ve never done it, but it might be called for while we’re traversing wide open water in the heat of Florida summer!
