6/26/20: Feels like 106?!

Dude.

1:00 in the afternoon, 92 feels like 106. But hey – the good news is that it’ll drop below 80 degrees tonight… to 78! 😳🥵. Heat Advisory until 6pm tonight. Again.

But actually, it didn’t feel as bad as yesterday! Maybe because it was cloudy this afternoon. We spent some time at the pool after about 3:00, and it was nice. We could sit in the lounge chairs without dripping sweat, and the pool didn’t feel quite as hot as yesterday.

Earlier in the day, I went over to the beach to scope it out and to wade in the water. Oh My Hot-tub! When it’s over 90 degrees outside your skin gets hot. Usually getting into water generally feels cooler than your skin. Not so today, kimosabee! That ocean water was HOT! 🥵 🔥 It was warmer than bath water. I think the sushi would already be cooked if you caught a fish in this water! YIKES! There was quite a bit of algae and some seaweed. We’re right at the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River, which runs out from Lake Okeechobee, so the gulf water is never clear here, and is not my favorite place to play in the salt water. I just wanted to see what the water temperature was. I guess I won’t complain about the temperature of the pool anymore!

I saw this little barrier for a sea turtle nest. This is not uncommon along our coast. You’d never know it by just looking at the sand, so I’m glad somebody knew so that the barrier could be put up to protect the nest.

While I was over at the hotel, I checked out the restaurant for dinner options. The option (singular) was $55 per person for a dinner consisting of one appetizer, one entree and two sides. I don’t think we’ll do that. And then just today, we read that Florida has shut down bars statewide from serving alcohol on site. They can serve food, but no booze. So we aren’t sure what establishments in Ft Myers Beach are considered ‘restaurants’ or ‘bars‘, so we don’t know who will be open now. Hmmmm. Maybe we won’t try to go to town for dinner tonight. I took some chicken out of the freezer for dinner. I’m glad we went to the Keys when we did! I’m sure our favorite little Rum Bar is closed again. 😔

This fella was waiting for me on the dock. He can really squawk, and his wing span is huge! I think he’s a great blue heron. He looks kinda skinny and scruffy.

While I was back at the boat getting stuff ready to go to the pool, I was texting with our son and daughter-in-law to-be. She sent this. It made me laugh, because there is a definite answer to this for our family. You wouldn’t find any of us running a 5k on any morning, let alone on a holiday morning! So, you know which kind of family we are. 😉🥂. Besides, mimosas don’t count, remember?

Alrighty then, back to the pool. When I got there, the only chairs available today were on the side where we could look across toward the beach. Nice spot. The pool felt better today…. maybe because I could mentally compare the temperature to the ocean, and this was definitely the cooler option!

Looking up in the sky, at about palm tree frond level, there were a gazillion dragonflies. WHAT? Yep – they stayed up there and didn’t bother us at all. One of the pool area attendants said that they eat mosquitoes! YAY dragonflies!

Later back at the boat, there was a project waiting to happen. (Isn’t there always? Like Mechanic says, when you’re off playing, something on the boat is breaking…. you just don’t know what it is yet.). We had hooked up our water hose to the dock, rather than filling our water tank. We plan to pull Island Girl out of the water in July for the months that we’ll be in Washington this summer. With her strapped down to the ground, we won’t have to worry so much about her during hurricane season while we’re gone, and Mechanic has some things he wants to get done on her while she’s out of the water. Anyway, we didn’t want to have a bunch of water in her tank, and didn’t want to put more in, so we were just going direct to the dock. But the water squealed anytime we used it, like maybe the restrictor valve was having an issue. Mechanic went out to check on it, and it broke right then and there. So now we couldn’t even use water out of the tank because of where the break happened. So while I fixed dinner, he McGyvered a fix. He’s amazing. Now we have water again. He’ll be able to fix it with the right parts (hopefully) after we get home. It’s always something.

We saw the local pirate ship go out for a sunset dinner cruise. At least they wait until they’re in the Gulf waters before they fire the cannons! We were safe. ☠️

And then we saw a tiki hut sail back in! Never a dull moment where we’re docked, because our bow is pointed right at the chanel. Even the Key West/Ft Myers ferry goes by here. Yep – the very same one that we were by in Key West. Thankfully this is a no-wake zone, and most boats follow the rules here.

I looked up the Ft Myers Beach Trolley schedule, and it runs until about 8:30pm. So we’re thinking we’ll take it into town tomorrow and try a local restaurant that we’ve never been to. Hopefully. Maybe I’ll call and make sure the place is actually open. It’s only about a mile into town from here, but in this heat, we aren’t going to walk it like we usually do!
